Tips to never forget what you study

August 17, 2017

Do you open a chapter after a month and ask yourself, “Did I ever study this”?
Do you never find time for revision?
Revision is the most important aspect of your study plan. Due to lack of time this is almost always ignored. But worry not, it is not that difficult to find this time. Here are some tips to sneak out time to do quick revision.

Tip #1 – Take revision as the first task of the day

If you have homework or projects due tomorrow it can wait. Start your study routine with revision of previously studied chapters. This works because if at the end of the day it gets late and you have not completed your work you are more likely to skip revision.
Note – Devote 30 min to 2 hours for revision depending on how much other work you have.

Tip #2 – Revise only where you went wrong last time

If you have less time at hand, revise only where you went wrong last time. It is very simple to do if you are preparing with SimplyLearnt. You can take the improvement test for the chapters you had already practiced. It give you a maximum of 20 questions to solve from the only questions you did wrong in your last practice session. It saves time and completes your revision.

Tip #3 – Revise on the go
Revision on the go is probably the easiest thing you can do. If you are travelling to some place or visiting someone where you do not have your books but do have some time. Use it do revision.
You can use SimplyLearnt’s app to quickly revise tips, formulae and flash cards.

Tip #4 – Revision Day once a fortnight

Make sure to keep a Sunday just to revision and no new chapter study. Ideally you should do it every fortnight but in busy months you can do it once a month. Keep this day to complete revision not a shortcut. Keeping a dedicated day will make it difficult to skip.
SimplyLearnt provides you Recap Tests where you can do all the questions you already did once again.

Tip #5 – Have a Revision Buddy

Nothing’s better than studying with a friend. You can motivate each other, solve each other’s doubts or even scold each other for being lazy. You can keep revision competitions to see who gets to complete their revision first.
You can keep a rapid fire quiz to assess your revision and reward each other.

How to pick chapters for your next Revision Day

70% of what is studied is likely to be forgotten in 1-2 days. If you actually practiced and not just studied then about 6-7 days. Hence, make sure to revise a chapter within a week of studying. If you have already done 1 revision then you can include that chapter in the next month.

Remember,
In short, we don’t remember things because of insufficient focus, time or attention spent on them, and because of insufficient practice, usage, revising or application. (Cognitive scientist - Dan Willingham)
